The twelve Zi Wei palaces: finding the Life Palace and reading the chart

Published Updated

The Life Palace is a position in a Zi Wei chart, not another name for your birthday. Use the lunar birth month and corrected birth hour to locate it, then read its stars and connected palaces. This guide includes a lookup table and a public chart you can recalculate.

Use your Gregorian birth date, recorded local time and birthplace to see Life, Body, stars and natal transformations. Chart calculation is free and requires no account. Zi Wei needs a known birth time.

Find your Life Palace

Is the Life Palace a birthday?

No. The Life Palace is one of the twelve palace labels, not a birth date or a number derived from the day alone. Once the lunar month and corrected hour are established, they locate its branch position. The full birth date still matters for palace stems, the Five-Phase Bureau and the stars occupying that position.

Open the free Zi Wei calculator with your Gregorian birth date, recorded local birth time and birthplace. No account is needed for the chart. Locate Life and Body in the result, then compare Life with Travel, Wealth and Career. Without a birth time, use the limited BaZi calculator three-pillar option instead of inventing an hour.

Start with the Life Palace

The Life Palace (Ming Gong) is the chart’s starting reference for temperament and overall direction in this tradition. Its branch position depends on the lunar birth month and birth hour—not directly on the birth year or day.

The year still affects palace stems and the Five-Phase Bureau, and the lunar day helps locate Zi Wei itself. Those later steps determine which stars occupy the Life Palace. Palace location and star occupants are related but different calculations.

A palace identifies a subject, not whether it will go well. Its stars, transformations and connections to other palaces supply the interpretive context.

Locating Life and Body

Begin at Yin for lunar month 1 and count forward to the birth month. From there count backward from the Zi hour to the birth hour for the Life Palace. Count forward instead for the Body Palace (Shen Gong).

The Body Palace is usually interpreted as an area of later effort or engagement. It can coincide with Life, Partner, Wealth, Travel, Career or Wellbeing. Zi/Wu hours place Body with Life; Chou/Wei with Wellbeing; Yin/Shen with Career; Mao/You with Travel; Chen/Xu with Wealth; Si/Hai with Partner.

The month-by-hour reference table below is calculated by the same engine as the chart. It is a location table, not a personality ranking.

Read four connected positions

The “three directions and four positions” method considers a palace, its opposite, and the two trine-related positions. For Life, this brings together Life, Travel, Wealth and Career.

For Partner, the connected areas are Partner, Career, Travel and Wellbeing. For Wealth, they are Wealth, Wellbeing, Life and Career. This is why reading one attractive or alarming star in isolation is incomplete.

An empty palace means no main star occupies it. It can still contain supporting stars or transformations, and its opposite is consulted. It does not mean that the life area is absent.

A public example

The worked chart uses the fictional birth 1990-03-15 10:00 in Taipei with the male chart setting. Recalculate it in the Zi Wei calculator using the original clock time; do not apply the solar correction before entering it.

Use the reference tables in two stages: locate the Life Palace from the lunar-month row and birth-hour column, then find that branch in the public chart table. Read the branch position, palace label and occupying stars as three separate pieces of information. The Chinese lookup table has the axes transposed: hour rows and lunar-month columns.

Its Life Palace contains Po Jun, with Zi Wei and Tian Xiang opposite; Qi Sha and Tan Lang occupy the connected Wealth and Career positions. This demonstrates how several palaces are read together, rather than proving a life outcome for a real person.

The site’s declared time rules

We resolve historical civil time and then apply the configured apparent-solar-time adjustment. A midnight rollover changes the date before conversion to the lunar calendar. Overseas or historical offsets cannot be replaced with a Taipei correction estimate.

At 23:00 the hour becomes Zi but the date remains the current corrected date until midnight. A leap lunar month is treated throughout as the same numbered month, rather than switching its second half to the next month.

The birth-year stem uses Li Chun, matching this site’s BaZi convention. A calculator using Lunar New Year can differ for births between the two boundaries. These are declared choices, not a claim that all Zi Wei schools use them.

An unknown birth hour cannot select a reliable Life Palace. Use a three-pillar BaZi chart instead of guessing the hour.

The natal result shows natal stars and birth-year transformations. Yearly Life-Palace and transformation placements are available separately in Annual Influences; check the year displayed there first. The site does not invent uncalculated minor periods or annual auxiliary stars.

Reference tables and worked examples

These tables use the same data functions as the Traditional Chinese guide. Chinese characters identify the traditional symbols; the accompanying English names explain how to read them.

Sources and reading notes

The explanations here are our own English wording. Classical titles and Chinese symbols identify the source tradition; they do not imply agreement between all schools.

  • The declared Zi Wei calculation convention

The tables and public fictional examples share the chart’s palace, star and transformation data. Modern star descriptions are interpretive summaries, not quotations from a single classical text. Agreement with the calculation does not establish predictive accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Life Palace another name for my birthday?
No. It is a palace position located from the lunar birth month and corrected birth hour. The full birth date is still needed to calculate the rest of the chart.
Which birth inputs locate the Life Palace?
The lunar month and the birth hour. The year and day affect later layers rather than this initial branch position.
Can I create a reliable Zi Wei chart without the hour?
No. The hour moves the Life Palace and all the other palace labels. The BaZi three-pillar option is the appropriate limited alternative.
What is the Body Palace?
A separately located marker traditionally associated with the area of later effort. It occupies one of six named life areas and is not the same as the Life Palace.
Why does another calculator show a different palace?
Compare solar-time correction, the late-Zi day rule, leap-month handling and year-boundary convention before comparing interpretations.
