The Five-Phase Bureau: locating Zi Wei and starting major periods

Published Updated

The Five-Phase Bureau is a chart parameter derived from the Life Palace’s stem-and-branch pair. It determines the placement of Zi Wei and the starting age of the first major period.

The larger number is not a better score. Water 2 and Fire 6 place stars differently and begin their timelines at different nominal ages.

From Life Palace to Bureau

First determine the Life Palace’s branch from lunar month and hour. Next assign its stem using the birth-year stem and the Five Tigers sequence. The Na Yin of that stem-and-branch pair supplies the Bureau’s element.

Five Tigers groups the year stems as Jia/Ji, Yi/Geng, Bing/Xin, Ding/Ren and Wu/Gui. Each group starts a particular stem at Yin and advances through the branches. The same sequence is also encountered when calculating BaZi month stems.

The year-stem-group by Life-Palace-branch table below is generated from the engine. It shows the intervening stem as well as the resulting Bureau, so the result can be traced rather than memorized.

First use: placing Zi Wei

The lunar birth day and Bureau number together locate Zi Wei. The remaining main stars then follow their fixed positional relationships. The day-by-Bureau reference table covers lunar days 1–30 for all five bureaus.

An implementation must handle the traditional quotient/remainder placement rule consistently. The table is generated through the same placement function used by the product, so it does not maintain a second hand-copied star map.

If a corrected time changes the lunar day, the Bureau can stay the same while Zi Wei moves. If it changes the birth hour, Life Palace and Bureau can change as well. Accurate inputs therefore matter before interpreting stars.

Second use: major periods

The Bureau number sets the first major period’s starting nominal age. Each period then spans ten years and occupies one palace. Direction follows the configured traditional gender and year-stem-polarity rule: yang-year male and yin-year female forward, the reverse pairings backward.

The age table below shows the sequence for all five bureaus. It should be read as a timeline convention, not as a claim that every period has one fixed emotional or financial quality.

Nominal age is not completed age

Zi Wei major periods use nominal age here: the birth year counts as age 1 and another year is added at Li Chun under the site’s convention. This is different from completed years since a birthday.

The site’s BaZi ten-year cycles use a separate starting calculation based on the interval to a solar term. Its timeline and the Zi Wei major-period timeline should not be expected to change in the same year merely because both have ten-year spans.

Not the same as a missing element

The Bureau’s element is the Na Yin classification of one palace pair. A BaZi element distribution is a tally and interpretation of stems, branches and hidden stems across the birth chart. A Water 2 Bureau does not prove that a BaZi chart contains much Water—or any visible Water at all.

Personality descriptions sometimes attached to bureaus vary by teaching source. The clear computational uses are star placement and starting age. For a reading, the main stars, palace structure and transformations supply the broader context.

Declared limits

Unknown birth time prevents a reliable Life Palace and therefore a reliable Bureau. Leap-month, solar-time and year-boundary conventions can differ between calculators. Compare those assumptions before concluding that a different Bureau is an arithmetic mistake.

Reference tables and worked examples

These tables use the same data functions as the Traditional Chinese guide. Chinese characters identify the traditional symbols; the accompanying English names explain how to read them.

Sources and reading notes

The explanations here are our own English wording. Classical titles and Chinese symbols identify the source tradition; they do not imply agreement between all schools.

  • The declared Zi Wei calculation convention

The tables and public fictional examples share the chart’s palace, star and transformation data. Modern star descriptions are interpretive summaries, not quotations from a single classical text. Agreement with the calculation does not establish predictive accuracy.

  • Five Tigers stem-starting mnemonic

The same traditional mnemonic is used for BaZi month stems and Zi Wei palace stems. A Bureau is derived from the Life Palace’s stem–branch Na Yin, not from an element supposedly missing in the chart.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Bureau?
Calculate the Life Palace’s stem and branch, then its Na Yin element. The Zi Wei chart summary also displays it.
Is Fire 6 better than Water 2?
No. The number determines placement and starting nominal age, not quality.
Does my Bureau tell me what element my BaZi lacks?
No. Those are different calculations using different chart objects.
Are major-period ages nominal or completed ages?
Nominal ages. This site counts the birth year as 1 and adds an age at Li Chun.
Why do Zi Wei and BaZi periods begin at different ages?
Zi Wei uses the Bureau number; BaZi uses the birth-to-solar-term interval. They are separate methods.
