Hexagram 8 · Kun / Earth (坤) palace · Earth (土) · Returning soul (歸魂)

Bi · Joining

Hexagram 8, Bi · Joining, has Kan / Water (坎) above Kun / Earth (坤). It belongs to the Kun / Earth (坤) palace, whose reference element is Earth (土).

Updated

Bi is a returning-soul hexagram, a stage traditionally associated with return, consolidation and bringing an existing matter together. Self is Mao Wood Officer on line 3; Other is Zi Water Wealth at the top. Other generates Self, suggesting external support alongside the responsibilities carried by the questioner. That combination can frame renewal or reconnection, but it is not a guarantee that a former arrangement should be resumed.

Relationships

Other generating Self gives the traditional picture of support offered from the counterpart. Returning-soul symbolism makes reconnection or restoring an existing bond a relevant theme. Whether that support exists must be checked in actual interaction; the chart cannot establish consent or another person’s intentions.

Money

Wealth sits at Other, so the interpretation looks toward partners, outside resources or cooperation rather than wholly independent effort. Its Water generates the Wood Self line. This may be read as resources supporting responsibilities, with a measured pace, but it does not guarantee income.

Career

Officer at Self emphasizes duty, pressure and taking responsibility. The returning stage can suit a question about resuming a role, renewing an arrangement or completing an older project. External support is symbolized by Other generating Self; it remains important to distinguish available help from simply carrying everything alone.

Health

The original traditional reading connects Officer at Self with burdens and stress, and Wood with historical body correspondences. Those associations cannot diagnose liver, joint or other conditions. The practical reflective theme is to notice recurring strain and use real support and professional care where needed.

Health themes are traditional symbolism, not a diagnosis. Seek medical care for symptoms or concerns.

These themes describe the static structure. A particular cast also needs its moving lines, month and day, and focus-line context. The same hexagram can support different interpretations in different situations.

Judgment and Image

Judgment比:吉。原筮元永貞,無咎。不寧方來,後夫凶。

Image地上有水,比;先王以建萬國,親諸侯。

The Judgment concerns joining and the conditions for a durable bond. The Image places water on the Earth and relates joining to building and maintaining political relationships. Our explanation emphasizes the quality and timing of association, rather than treating belonging as automatically beneficial.

The Chinese Judgment is from the Zhou Yi; the Image is from the Image commentary. The displayed Chinese was collated against the recorded sources. This English explanation is our own, not a quotation from a modern translation. Read the Chinese source (opens a new tab).

Reading the structure

Hexagram 8, Bi · Joining, has Kan / Water (坎) above Kun / Earth (坤). It belongs to the Kun / Earth (坤) palace, whose reference element is Earth (土).

This is the Returning soul (歸魂) stage. Self is line 3: Mao (卯), Wood (木), Officer (官鬼). Other is line 6: Zi (子), Water (水), Wealth (妻財). Self locates the questioner’s side; Other locates the counterpart or target. They do not by themselves determine an outcome.

The palace element is the reference for the Five Relationships: what generates it is Parent; what it generates is Child; what controls it is Officer; what it controls is Wealth; the same element is Sibling. These are symbolic subject roles, not necessarily literal family members.

All five relationship categories appear in the visible lines, so each subject category has a direct structural reference. This does not establish a favorable outcome or predictive accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

Is this only a picture of pressure?
No. Officer at Self emphasizes responsibility, while Other generating Self adds a separate support theme.
Must I return to an old path?
No. Returning-soul symbolism makes consolidation and reconnection relevant, but it is not an instruction to restart an unsuitable situation.
Does the Other line prove someone cares more?
No. It describes a symbolic direction of support. Actual behavior and both people’s wishes are needed to assess a relationship.
